Richard is a native West Knoxvillian and graduate of Bearden High School and The University of Tennessee, with a degree in marketing. In 1980, he joined Dean-Planters Realty and soon became Principal Broker; in 1988 he and his brother David purchased the company, changed the name to Dean-Smith, Inc., and Richard was named President.
Richard’s reputation as a keen advisor, an honest and skilled negotiator, and tireless workhorse has earned him an elite clientele and consistently placed him among Knoxville’s most successful agents. Since joining Berkshire-Hathaway HomeServices, he has been awarded Berkshire-Hathaway’s Platinum Award annually, placing him among the top 1% of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices agents in the country.
He has represented the buyers and sellers of Knoxville’s most extraordinary properties and has been the selected agent of many of Knoxville’s most formidable corporations for over 35 years. Although he is well-known locally as a specialist in luxury estates, he’s quick to say he enjoys helping young couples find their first home as much as marketing the most expensive house in the state of Tennessee.
Richard is a certified Luxury Collection Specialist and a member of the Knoxville Area Association of REALTORS, the Smoky Mountain Association of REALTORS, the Tennessee Association of REALTORS, and the National Association of REALTORS. He and his wife, Karen, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, share a farm with four horses and three dogs in West Knoxville. They are the parents of Meredith, a Nurse Educator at Parkwest Hospital, and Alex, a professional artist in New York, and the grandparents of Haili and Lacy.
